26 Licensed Practical Nurses Graduate

Cayhill- On Friday, June 26, 2013, 26 Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) took their oath at their graduation ceremony at the Belair Community Center.

After a welcome and congratulatory address by Member of Parliament Sarah Wescot-Williams, several congratulatory speeches were addressed to the graduates by representatives of the various health care organizations from which graduates are employed.

Of the graduate, 10 were nurses of the St. Maarten Medical Center, 6 from the White and Yellow Cross, 4 from Saba, 3 from St. Eustatius and 3 from Mental Health Foundation.

The eighteen month LPN nurses course was coordinated and instructed by the education department of the St. Maarten Medical Center in association with Instituto pa Formashon den Enfermeria (IFE) in Curacao.

Ms. Natalie Garmes, Adjunct Director IFE was present at the ceremony to congratulate the nurses and present the diplomas. She also applauded the St. Maarten Medical Center for seeing the necessity of providing the course in St. Maarten in the English language.

The nurses also expressed gratitude to the SMMC Education department for their training and guidance throughout the course. On behalf of the students, Marita Jardin, LPN graduate, gave a thank you address and also encouraged her colleagues to serve with compassion quoting from Maya Angelou “people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

Course Coordinator/Manager Patient Care of the SMMC, Mr. Antonio Pantophlet and Instructor Brunilda Illidge encouraged the graduates to continue improving their knowledge and skills yet with the accolades they have received thus far and will earn in the future, they are most importantly ‘the nurse’; the nurse who puts the patient above self and give service with willingness and love for their profession.

Mr. Pantophlet message to the graduates was one of inspiration. “No matter what school you attend, if you don’t have the willpower, determination and a force for achieving, you will never make it in life. Your dream will always be a dream. In this group there were many drop outs and students who came from schools that some people look down on. These graduates and their family have shown that they too can achieve more. A drop out does not mean “drop dead”. You get back in the system, and show others that they too can grow and fulfill their dream.     

The nurses took the Oath under the supervision of Manager Patient Care, Antonio Pantophlet. As they take on their responsibilities as LPNs, the Education department of SMMC and IFE wish them success in their careers.
